1. Reaching Shiva

Bhakti or devotion is the earth;
Guru, the seed.
The seed sprouts into leaves,
the leaves of Linga1, the Shiva Consciousness.
The leaves give rise to a flower,
the flower of Vichaara, the right thinking.
The flower transforms into a fruit,
the fruit of Aachaara, right action.
The fruit ripens,
this is the fruit of Nishpatti or fullness.
As the complete fruit is coming off the plant,
wanting the fruit for himself,
Kudala-sangama-deva, Shiva,
gathers it in his hands2.

1The Linga given by the Guru for one’s own worship is called ISHTA LINGA which is spherical in shape, small in size
2The last two lines indicate Aikya — the Bhakta or devotee, after attaining Nishpatti or the state of fullness, becomes one with Shiva. The two, Shiva and Bhakta become one, hence Aikya( ‘eka’ means one)

Awareness is Shiva. Shiva is represented by Linga. The Guru ceremoniously hands over the Linga to the disciple, awakening in him the latent Shiva Consciousness. For Shiva Consciousness to ripen, besides the meditative worship of this ISHTA LINGA with devotion, one has to nurture right thinking and right conduct. When the Shiva Consciousness ripens, Bhakta or the devotee becomes one with Shiva.

Awareness hugging awareness.
