91. No Castes

One heats the metals, so he is an ironsmith.
One washes clothes, so he is a washer man.
One weaves cloth, so he is a weaver.
One recites the Vedas, so he is a brahmin.
Kudala-sangama-deva, Shiva,
only he is a noble person
who knows (the joy) of being with Shiva awareness.
— Basavanna

Caste is the label given to a profession one follows. All work is of equal importance and therefore, no one can claim superiority by citing the caste label. A noble person is the one who knows the joy of being with Linga. The one who stays anchored in awareness can be called a kulaja or a noble person, no matter what kind of work he is required to do.

Work I must. Let me not brand the work I do as superior or lowly. Let me just work with awareness.
